Liem Swie King, a name synonymous with badminton excellence, hails from the regency of Kudus in Central Java, Indonesia. Born on February 28, 1956, King’s journey in badminton began at a tender age, supported by his parents who recognized his natural talent for the sport.

King’s prowess on the court quickly caught the attention of Budi Hartono, the owner of the prestigious Djarum Badminton Club, who invited him to join at just 14 years old. Despite a loss in the final match of a local competition, his potential was undeniable. 

His dedication and relentless training soon bore fruit, and at 17, he clinched a gold medal at the PON (National Sports Week), catapulting him into the national spotlight.

Internationally, King’s fame soared after he challenged his idol, Rudi Hartono, in the All England final in 1976. This marked the beginning of a glittering career that saw him dominate the world stage from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s. Known for his ferocious jumping smash, King won the All England titles in 1978, 1979, and 1981, establishing himself as one of the world’s leading singles players of his era.

His achievements are not just limited to individual accolades. King was a pivotal member of the Indonesian team that won the Thomas Cup multiple times, showcasing his skills in both singles and doubles categories.
